Welcome back to Melissa's Studio!

It's autumn in the studio, and Art Cat and I have been enjoying the sunny, windy days in our little space. Art Cat especially likes the coming and going. See her here, quite interested in GOING!

I'm still working on my Art Journals, and probably always will, but I'd like now to share another painting with you, step by step, using more kinds of media together than I've used before. Many people are mystified by the steps involved in creating an abstract painting. Here's what happened to get this painting.

Beginning with a full sheet of Arches #140 cold press watercolor paper, trimmed with 1” blue painters' tape (for a free mat later) I first drip premixed watercolor from a needle nose plastic bottle.

Next comes a spray bottle to create texture. Some begins to merge with the dripped paint.

I now spread a little of the dripped paint with a brush to begin some shapes.

I now spread a little of the dripped paint with a brush to begin some shapes.

At this point, I use pigment-less crayon to add some swirls and spirals which will show up next as I introduce a more dominant color, Magenta, and the shape placement continues.

And another dominant color.
It doesn't get much more dominant that Thalo blue!

Now I squeeze some metallic acrylic paints right from the tube over
portions of previously painted areas.   I now scrape the acrylic paint using my expired Portland Art Museum card.
Can't hurt, might help right?

Here's an overexposed view of the painting so far. The whole thing (except the magenta areas) will like a glaze of watercolor Quinacridone Gold. Almost always a good idea.

At this point, I add a Thalo Blue freehand circle in the painting. Bad idea. Did I mention Thalo Blue being a strong color? So, to minimize the Big Blue Ball, I collage yellow, green and pink tissue paper over areas needing a little something, and The Ball.

Still looking to add one more medium into the mix, I skim some wax pastels over the dried collage and thick paint areas and highlight the texture. (Thanks for the tip, Norma. I learn all the time from my students.)

** I am now in a holding pattern with this piece. Not sure it's finished, but I don't want to do the wrong thing. Here are several close ups of sections. How many different media can you find?
