Art Lesson # Five: Break it Up!

In my own work I’m still obsessing on Definition Painting, but I wanted to share another approach to still life that takes you one more step away from being a slave to reality.
Reality is so overrated.

Begin with a fairly simple set up. I have used the same subject to show you many ways to approach this assignment.   Make your initial sketch, then overlay shapes. These can be uniform, gradually getting larger, as in the samples on the right or they can be carefully spread around the composition.  See below.

I have used rectangular shapes but you may want to try circles or triangles or even more organic shapes.

This assignment can be done with watercolor or acrylic. If using watercolor (or watered-down acrylic), you may want to experiment   with white or colorless crayon for a reverse, resist technique  If you do this, you’ll have to wait with your outer images until you see where the wax resist leaves off. Glaze over the crayon to make it visible, let dry, then continue your branches (or whatever you’re drawing) on into the next shape.

Have fun and don’t be afraid to share your results with me in the Guestbook.
